A pedestrian who was hit by a truck in west Edmonton has died.

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) confirmed the 73-year-old woman was sent to hospital with serious injuries following the collision at 170 Street and 95 Avenue.

Investigators said the woman was crossing at a marked crosswalk when an eastbound Toyota Tundra turned into the lane and hit her.

Officials said the woman succumbed to her injuries early Sunday morning.

EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit will be working to determine the factors involved in the collision.

However, officials said speed and alcohol were not suspected.

Charges are pending against the 42-year-old male driver of the truck.

The incident has prompted police to warn drivers and pedestrians to be careful on the roads.

“Don’t make the assumption that you are the person that has the automatic right of way and then proceed walking into the crosswalk into the intersection or proceed through the intersection as a driver,” Acting Sgt. Philippe Aube explained.

He added that making eye contact was important for both drivers and pedestrians.

According to EPS, this is Edmonton’s third pedestrian fatality and the 10th traffic fatality of 2014.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police, 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
