A person was killed Wednesday after being struck by a passing semi-truck that was blown into a ditch north of Edmonton.

RCMP say the person was travelling along Highway 44, approximately 20 kilometres north of Westlock, when their pickup truck was blown off the road into the ditch.

The driver exited the pickup, and then a passing semi-truck was also blown off the highway.

The semi-truck struck the driver of the pickup, resulting in fatal injuries.

Highway 44 was closed Wednesday afternoon and has since reopened however a tow ban remains in effect due to poor weather conditions.

RCMP are reporting several instances of vehicles being blown off the road or drivers who are unable to control their vehicle.

"Consider not traveling if not necessary. Our entire region is affected and the gusts are sudden and unpredictable, "said RCMP Staff Sgt. Roberta McKale in a press release.

RCMP are asking motorists to drive carefully through the region, and are urging drivers having trouble controlling their vehicles to pull off the road and take shelter until the wind calms.

If a driver is blown into a ditch and can’t get out, RCMP advise them to stay in their vehicle and call for assistance.
