Police have charged a 19-year-old man in what they call a random stabbing rampage incident near the Kingsway Garden Mall Saturday.
Officials told CTV News the incident began at 6:15 p.m. near the McDonald’s restaurant close to the mall.
Police said Brandon Meeches allegedly attempted to rob three people in the parking lot.
“When he was unsuccessful he attempted to stab the first pair of males,” Staff Sgt. Malcolm Allan explained.
One of the men suffered a serious, but non-life threatening injury to his back while the second man was not injured.
“From that point this subject rode his bicycle to the Kingsway Garden Mall transit centre and without attempting to rob anyone or for any other reason just stabbed a male who was waiting for a bus,” Staff Sgt. Allan said.
A woman helped the 34-year-old victim to safety on another nearby bus, which is when Meeches allegedly stabbed her in the back.
“Her injury was quite life threatening. She was rushed to hospital and operated on,” Staff Sgt. Allan explained, adding the woman was expected to recover.
Officers arrested Meeches a short distance away from the transit centre.
He has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery and numerous violence and weapons offences.
Officials said he did not know any of the victims.
