Police south of Edmonton are investigating, after an injured child was brought into hospital in Camrose, and died the next day.
Camrose Police said on Wednesday, staff at St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose examined a 16-month old child, who had been brought in with an undetermined life-threatening medical condition.
“We don’t have a cause,” Deputy Chief Lee Foreman with Camrose Police said. “There’s no explanation for why this child was in the medical condition it was, and so that causes us to have some concerns.”
The injured child was airlifted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, but passed away early Thursday.
Officials said an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
Police said investigators were assisting the Medical Examiner’s office on the case – they stopped short of calling the case suspicious, and results of the autopsy will determine how police handle it.
Investigators said they believe a “situation may have occurred at the home”, which will be part of the investigation.
“We obviously want to know what activities the child was engaged in with the parents, what took place, see if that helps in getting an explanation for the condition the child was in,” Foreman said.
Camrose police have also spoken to the child’s mother and another adult, and said both were cooperative.
