Premier Rachel Notley and her cabinet officially took over their posts on Sunday following the swearing-in ceremony at the Alberta Legislature.
Notley herself will be taking over as Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations while her 11-member team takes on multiple portfolios in a cabinet she described as “lean, efficient.”
The longest serving MLA in the Legislature, Brian Mason, will take on the roles of Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Transportation. He has also been appointed as the Government House Leader.
The former bus driver and city councilor was first elected as MLA for Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood in 2000.
Minister of Education and Minister of Culture and Tourism will be filled by Edmonton-Calder MLA David Eggen.
Eggen first served the riding from 2004-2008 and was re-elected in 2012. He has a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and also has a teaching career behind him.
Edmonton-Beverly-Clarview MLA, Deron Bilious will take on the portfolios of Municipal Affairs and Service Alberta.
He will also serve as Deputy Government House Leader.
First elected for the riding in 2012, Bilious has a teaching career behind him as well as work with Canada World Youth.
Former Calgary alderman, Joe Ceci will take over as the President of the Treasury Board and as Minister of Finance.
Ceci, who represents Calgary-Fort, brings to the role a Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Calgary and 15 years as a city alderman.
To liaise with the Energy industry, Notley has placed Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley MLA Margaret McCuaig-Boyd as the Ministry of Energy.
A former teacher and administrator McCuaig-Boyd ran her own consulting business that offered support to small and medium-sized businesses. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of Alberta and a Master’s Degree in Administration and Leadership from San Diego State University.
Alberta’s new Minister of Health, Sarah Hoffman, served as the chair of the Edmonton Public School Board. She also holds a Master’s Degree in education policy studies from the University of Alberta.
Calgary-Buffalo MLA Kathleen Ganley will take on the roles of Minister of Justice and Solicitor General and Minister of Aboriginal Relations. A former lawyer specializing in labour and employment law, Ganley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, a Bachelor Degree in philosophy and a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary.
Lori Sigurdson was named Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education and Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour.
Sigurdson has been a social worker for over 20 years as well as the vice president of Public Interest Alberta. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a Bachelor and Master degree in social work.
Oneil Carlier, who worked with Agricultural Canada as a geotechnical technician, has been named Alberta’s new Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.
A former journalist, consultant and economic policy analyst with the Alberta Federation of Labour, Shannon Phillips becomes the province’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, Minister of Parks and Recreation as well as the new portfolio of Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
The Lethbridge-West MLA will also be the Deputy Government House Leader.
Former lawyer specializing in Aboriginal law, Irfan Sabir has been appointed Minister of Human Services.
He holds degrees in economics, social work and law.
