Canadian Border Services Agency and RCMP officials were showing off the results of two major drug seizures and arrests at the Calgary International Airport in April.
The first incident took place on April 24, when Abdulhamid Hamad was given a secondary examination by CBSA officers – similar steps were taken when Susannah Banico arrived back in Canada.
Both were returning from Amsterdam, and in both cases, X-rays of their luggage revealed suspicious masses in what looked like false-bottom compartments.
CBSA officials took samples, which tested positive for suspected heroin.
Officers said Hamad’s luggage contained about 12 kilograms of the illicit drug, while Banico’s contained about four kilograms.
“The first case is the largest heroin seizure ever for the CBSA in Alberta, and combined together, these are the largest drug seizures so far this year,” Lauren D. Delgaty, Regional Director General for the Prairie Region said in a press release.
Both of the people involved were arrested, and turned over to RCMP – they’re each facing two charges each under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
