Police in northern Alberta said the search for remains of a young woman continues at the Grande Prairie landfill, while crews deal with extremely cold weather and dangerous working conditions.

On February 11, RCMP said that Shane Gregory Babitsch, 21, had been arrested and charged with first degree murder in the death of Courtney Breanna Johnstone, 26.

Johnstone had been reported missing January 30 by family members.

Members from the RCMP Special Tactical Operations Team started searching the Grande Prairie Aquatera Waste Management site, where Johnstone’s remains are believed to be located.

Police said officers searching the landfill had dealt with extreme cold temperatures and snowfall, and dangers stemming from the industrial and medical waste, and toxic gases found in the landfill.

Meanwhile, RCMP said Babitsch was remanded in custody after a court appearance February 12, he’s expected to appear in a Grande Prairie court on March 12.
