RCMP will be providing extra security at a St. Albert high school Monday after a threat was made against a staff member.
Paul Kane High School found threatening graffiti in the school on Wednesday, which appeared to be directed towards a staff member. The threat was said to take place on Monday, February 22.
RCMP officers were advised of the graffiti on Friday and began investigating.
In a letter to parents, Principal Duncan Knoll said when students arrive at the school on Monday, RCMP members will be on site.
“It is unfortunate that someone has chosen to communicate something that is threatening to the school,” wrote Knoll.
“We encourage parents to have a conversation with their child, and if they have any further information that would help us with our investigation, please encourage your child to come forward.”
Classes at Paul Kane will progress as usual, but students are asked to only use the front doors.
RCMP said Safe School protocols are being enacted; however those steps are not being made public.
"At this point we are conducting a police investigation into this matter so therefore we will not be discussing the specifics of the threat or the specifics of our response plan," said Cpl. Laurel Kading with the St. Albert RCMP.
Threats to school are not common in St. Albert, according to the RCMP, but each case is investigated and treated seriously.
“We don’t know if this is a serious threat that someone has made or if this is someone who was at a point of anger venting,” said Kading. “But because we know a threat was made, we will treat everything seriously.”
