Some residents have been surprised by the low water level in the North Saskatchewan river.

Long-time Edmontonian Fred Wischlinski said the water levels are the lowest he has seen.

“There are sandbars out here that you never saw years ago – or even last year but now you can walk 40 feet out in some spots.”

The low levels made Keith Macpherson think twice before heading out with his son, Issac, on a canoe trip.

“I am just hoping we don’t get beached somewhere in the middle of the river, underneath the bridge or something like that because there is hardly any water.”

Low-flow bulletins have been issued for rivers around Alberta and data from the government indicates the water level in the North Saskatchewan is below average.
