A new playground in southeast Edmonton is the site of an arson investigation after it was significantly damaged in a fire.
Emergency crews were called out shortly before 9:00 p.m. Sunday to the playground behind the Lee Ridge Elementary School on Millbourne Road in Mill Woods.
The blaze was extinguished within an hour, but not before most of the play structure was destroyed.
Investigators believe the fire was deliberately set and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
The playground only opened last year, following four years of planning, fundraising and construction. It was part of the Leefield Community League's park redevelopment efforts.
