City Councillor pushes for better flood prevention in Edmonton after heavy rains during the summer.

Twice in July localized flooding trapped drivers on Whitemud Drive. That flooding shone a spotlight on the drainage issues in the area.

Councillor Michael Walters believes it’s important to take a proactive approach to the flooding. Those floods have prompted the city to re-evaluate how it deals with major storms.

He wants to see a warning system implemented, such as digital boards to alert drivers.

“I don’t want to see people needing to be rescued by a boat from the Whitemud, or from the Yellowhead, or from 170th, or wherever these weather events can have that kind of effect.” Councillor Walters said.

City administration is set to have the first half of its report ready by early November.
