The Edmonton Oilers revealed the team’s first mascot Monday, named in memory of the team’s original owner.
The Oilers introduced Hunter, the Canadian Lynx in a video posted on Facebook Monday morning.
The mascot was named Hunter in a tribute to ‘Wild’ Bill Hunter, the original owner of the team, who founded the Oilers in 1972 – that year is reflected on the jersey the mascot will wear, with #72.
A lynx was chosen, the Oilers said, following research done in partnership with the Edmonton Valley Zoo.
The team said there are more Canadian Lynx in Alberta than anywhere else in the world – and they live in Edmonton’s River Valley.
In addition, the team surveyed more than 2,200 students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 9, from around the city, and the team said the lynx was the most popular choice.
The Oilers said the mascot will have a presence in the community, and will make a number of appearances including hospital visits, festivals, school visits, and other events in the community, in addition to appearances on game days.
