Police in northern Alberta are investigating after a highway crash resulted in the death of a woman in her 60s.

Grande Prairie RCMP said police and emergency crews were called to the intersection of Highway 43 and 124 Street at about 9 p.m. Sunday, after a collision between a small car and a pickup truck was reported.

The driver of the car, identified as a 63-year-old woman, was trapped inside the car for some time, and had to be rescued by fire department members.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she later died.

Two people were inside the truck, the female passenger was injured but here injuries were not believed to be life threatening, the driver was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police said reports suggested the driver of the car was attempting a left turn onto Highway 43 from the street, when the car turned into the path of the pickup truck – however, the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash.

RCMP said the name of the deceased was being withheld as authorities attempted to notify next-of-kin.
