RCMP north of Edmonton are investigating after a semi-truck burned Tuesday morning, backing up traffic in the area for several hours.

Police and firefighters were called to the area of Highway 825 north of Highway 37 at about 8 a.m. Tuesday – after the fire in a semi-truck and trailer was reported.

Firefighters from Namao, Gibbons and Bon Accord responded and put out the fire.

Police said their investigation found the driver of the semi had noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment on his truck Tuesday morning, so he pulled over.

Meanwhile, another driver who is an off-duty firefighter stopped to help, and tried to put out the blaze with a small fire extinguisher.

The driver, along with others who stopped to help, set up a perimeter until emergency crews arrived – as the trailers on the burning semi had previously contained fuel and they were concerned what was left could be ignited.

Traffic had to be detoured away from the area for several hours Tuesday, it was cleared up around noon.

No one was injured in the incident.
