The Alberta government has appointed an independent panel to determine if two high-voltage transmission lines between the Edmonton and Calgary regions are needed.

The panel, which will consist of four members, will look at data and other factors relating to the two north-south lines and are scheduled to report back to the government by Feb. 10th.

Energy Minister Ted Morton says the panel will look at the impact on consumers versus the need for power in a growing province.

Former chairman of the University of Alberta's board of governors, Brian Heidecker, will lead the panel.
