It may be some Albertan's lucky day as the Lotto 6/49 jackpot for tonight is $55 million.

According to a spokesperson with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, the province holds the record for the top three jackpot wins.

“Fifty per cent of sales for a lottery happen the day of the draw so there will be a lot of people waiting to get tickets today,” Andrea Morantz explained.

“People who don’t normally play the lottery will buy a ticket because after all, its $55 million dollars.”

According to our CTV Web Poll 73 per cent of respondents said they planned to get a ticket, while the other 27 per cent said the odds of winning are holding them back.

Morantz said that many new lottery groups were formed when the jackpot gets this high.

This will be the biggest jackpot in Canadian history.

“The closest we’ve ever come is 54.2 million dollars and that was back in October of 2005.”
