Trustees with the Edmonton Catholic School Board are expected to determine the future of four schools in east Edmonton Tuesday afternoon.
The meeting follows months of public consultations, letter-writing, and emotional appeals by parents and students.
School officials are looking at closing St. Gabriel Elementary, St. Brendan Elementary, St. James Elementary and St. Kevin Junior High – all due to low enrollment, and high maintenance costs for the aging buildings.
Officials said those schools have an average enrollment rate of about 40 percent, and each of the buildings are at least 50-years-old, and have a combined maintenance cost of $22 million.
The board would then move students from the closed schools into one Kindergarten to Grade 9 school with spaces for 750 students, that would be built on the St. Brendan School site.
The Catholic School Board is looking at a number of different scenarios in terms of closures – and in the meeting Tuesday, each school would be looked at and voted on separately.
