More than a week after he was found guilty of killing a 23-year-old mother of two in an LRT station in May 2010, Colton Ferguson learned he would have to serve 15 years in jail before being eligible for parole.

On Friday, Ferguson, 21, learned he would be required to serve 15 years behind bars before he would be eligible for parole.

Last week, Ferguson was found guilty of second-degree murder in the case, which carries an automatic life sentence.

He was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Heather Rae Thurier back in May 2010.

The entire incident was caught by surveillance cameras at the Stadium LRT station, evidence that police said helped investigators track down Ferguson within four days of the shooting.

In the video, Ferguson was recorded encountering Thurier, and the two people she was with in the LRT station pedway.

Ferguson and Thurier reportedly began arguing, before Ferguson pulled a .22 calibre rifle out of his backpack, and pointed it at Thurier – shooting her moments later.

Thurier died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Nearly a dozen members of the victim's family were in court to hear the decision, and told CTV News they are angry Ferguson never apologized.

"No, never, [he didn't apologize] on the stand," Nicole Gladue, Thurier's older sister said. "I am so angry about that,

"He's very cold hearted."

Many of the family members wore t-shirts in court with the victim's photo on them – an action Justice Sterling Sanderman admonished them, if their intention was to try and garner sympathy from the judge.

However, outside of court the family told CTV News they wore the shirts to simply honour the memory of their loved one.
