The Sourdough Raft Race on the North Saskatchewan River has been happening for more than 50 years - but this year there are concerns about the condition of the river.
“The water level is so high now that it’s cutting into some of the banks. So we have to make sure that it’s safe for spectators, the volunteers and those putting rafts in the river,” said race Admiral Peter Lawlor Wednesday.
Every year, participants build their own rafts and race down the river to win cash prizes and to soak others. This year’s event is scheduled for July 14th - just over two weeks away. Organizers say they have a contingency plan in case water levels remain high but aren't releasing any details just yet.
“We're expecting that the water will drop over the next couple of weeks,” said Lawlor.
Returning participants are hopeful the event goes ahead as scheduled.
“I’ve been told in the next couple of weeks, in the next couple weeks it could drop. So we are focused on being there on the 14th and having fun again this year,” said Vince Cerisano.
At this point, the event is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, July 14th at Terwillegar Park.
