Josh Classen's Forecast: Mild temperatures linger through the week

Dec. 23, 2024. Dec. 23, 2024.

Fog has developed over the northern half of Alberta and in east-central Alberta once again this morning.

Advisories are in effect for most of northern AB, areas just north and east of Edmonton and throughout east-central parts of the province.

That's a pattern we've seen for the past few days as daytime snowmelt has added moisture to the surface layer of the atmosphere and as temperatures dropped in the evenings, that moisture condenses and creates fog.

We should see that fog burn off by mid-morning, but it may re-develop tonight after another warm and melty afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to get to around 4 C in the Edmonton area this afternoon with a mix of sun and cloud.

We'll be a degree or two cooler Tuesday (but still above zero) and then right around the freezing mark for afternoon highs Wed/Thu.

Morning temperatures are forecast to be in the -5 C range.

It's a fairly quiet weather pattern with no major storms anywhere in the province this week. The only issue is a slight risk of some patchy freezing rain or mixed precipitation around or just NE of the Edmonton area tomorrow.

That won't be a huge system, so most areas won't get anything. But, check road and weather conditions if you're travelling in that area Tuesday afternoon/early evening.

Wind will probably pick up a bit on Tuesday. Gusts could be in the 30-40 km/h range.

Outside of that - mild and snow-free week of weather for the vast majority of the province.

Temperatures will trend cooler towards the end of the week and we'll likely see daytime highs drop back into the -5 C to -10 C range for next week (and possibly as early as the coming weekend).

The 30-yr average highs for Dec 24 and 25 are: -4 C and -5 C.

We'll be well above that this year, and pretty close to last year's temperatures.
