After leading one of Alberta’s opposition parties for nearly four years, Liberal Leader Raj Sherman announced Monday he was resigning as leader, and would not seek reelection as MLA.
In a press conference at the Alberta Legislature Monday, the Edmonton-Meadowlark MLA said he was stepping down as Liberal Leader, but would stay on as MLA until a provincial election.
"It's time for me to turn the next page of my life," Sherman said in the press conference. "My son's 20, he's at Ryerson and my mother's 76, I lost a parent along the way so it's a personal family decision that I've made."
“I intend to return to private life once the current mandate ends and I finish serving the people of Meadowlark,” Sherman said in a statement. “I am stepping aside as leader so that the team can continue to move forward.
“I has truly been an honour and a privilege to work with this team and I wish them all the best.”
Sherman was elected leader of the Liberals in September 2011, at the time, he was the Leader of the Official Opposition.
Before becoming Liberal Leader, he was part of the Progressive Conservative caucus.
