RCMP officers were providing security Monday at a St. Albert High School, following a threat against a staff member.

Students could only enter and exit the school using the front doors.

The threat came in the form of a letter and graffiti on a school wall and it mentioned Monday, February 22. Police called the threat “obscure” but wouldn't elaborate on what that meant.

“A balanced approach is always the difficult one to manage. Do you underreact or do you overreact?” said St. Albert RCMP Insp. Ken Foster.

“However, it's important to note that any threats have to be taken seriously, whether they're believed to be a hoax or not until we can determine otherwise.”

Students Monday morning said they were not worried but the RCMP presence does give them an extra sense of assurance.

“I think it's good that they're handling it the way they are because you can't take any chances,” said Evan Gamble, a grade 12 student.

“From what I'm hearing from my friends, this is just some stupid kid writing in a bathroom but whatever it was, you have to take stuff like this seriously.”

At the end of the school day, RCMP said staff members and students faced no safety issues and the investigation was ongoing. They’re not sharing whether they have a leads on a suspect.
