Part of Henday, Whitemud closed due to 'extensive damage' after Friday crash

Share

Part of Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive in southeast Edmonton was damaged this weekend.

A semi-tractor trailer carrying an excavator hit the Whitemud overpass bridge Friday morning.

The excavator remained in place Saturday, as the bridge will need to be reinforced before it can be removed.

"The damages will be significant and the effect it could have on the commuter public could be significant going forward because of this incident," said RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

Alberta Transportation said an engineering consultant was conducting an assessment of the damage, with work possibly lasting over the weekend.

Savinkoff said the overpass will take a "fairly extensive amount of time to repair" but did not offer a timeline.

Sections of Anthony Henday Drive that were closed Friday had reopened Saturday, but drivers should expect traffic disruptions as work continues.

The driver was not injured, but Savinkoff said they have been ticketed under the traffic safety act.
