Witnesses say police officers shot a pit bull thirteen times after the dog allegedly turned on police after being tasered following a fight with another dog.

Police were called to a home near 120th Avenue and 91st Street around 7:30 p.m. after they received reports of two dogs attacking a woman.

When officers arrived on scene there was no woman to be found.  They instead saw two dogs fighting, with a pit bull biting the neck of the other dog.

Police used pepper spray on the dog, but when that has no effect they tasered the animal.  Officers say that's when the animal lunged towards them.

Witnesses tell CTV News police officers shot at the dog 13 times before killing it.

The entire ordeal played out in front of the 17-year-old owner of the pit bull.

"Instead of just tasering him again they just pulled out their gun and started firing. I was right there, I thought I was getting shot," said pitbull owner Mitchell Zohner.

Zohner says his dog Otis was running towards him when police allege the dog was about to attack them. Neighbours however, say the dog was going "crazy" and police were justified in their actions.

According to a police investigating Otis had escaped his yard and jumped the neighbour's fence before attacking another dog.  That dog was treated for injuries sustained in the dog fight and is recovering at an emergency verterinary clinic.

No charges have been laid.
