A Canadian journalist and mother, who pens a popular blog is at the centre of a firestorm – after writing about her vacation, which she took weeks after giving birth.

Rebecca Eckler contributes to the blog mommyish.com – and came under fire after posting online that she was leaving her 10-week-old baby with a babysitter for a six-day vacation in Mexico.

In her blog about the vacation, she admitted:

“It is a vacation for me, since I can’t read the mind of a 2-month-old baby, I’m not sure he’s going to really miss me.”

She went on to explain:

“Yes, I'm ditching my baby. I think that, even from his early age, I'm teaching him a sense of independence.”

Eckler spoke to ABC News about the controversy, and said she has no regrets about taking the holiday.

“I think a happy mom makes a happy child, and you know your child better than anyone else,” Eckler said.

“Everybody’s going to have an opinion about something, including this.”

The subject has sparked much debate online, even as far as the CTV Edmonton newsroom.
