Students from across Canada and the US looking to celebrate their proms in an environment that supports their sexual identity gathered in Edmonton Saturday night for the Queer Prom.

The third annual event brought more than 100 youth to the Citadel Theatre to celebrate the end of the school year in a safe and supportive environment.

"It's a queer prom, so every minority that's left out is able to have a prom of their own, where they're accepted by everyone and everyone is here to support anyone," said Katie, who came to support her friends.

The event also provides a way for the gay and lesbian community to set the stage for the Pride Parade which takes place in Edmonton on Saturday, June 13, 2009.
