RCMP are investigating the death of a woman who, hours before being pronounced dead, had been in custody at the Maskwacis detachment.

RCMP said they had been investigating a case of domestic violence on July 19 when they took the woman, 35, into custody at about 11:00 p.m.

A few hours later, she was found unresponsive in a police cell.

The woman received CPR before being transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit did their own investigation of the in-custody death. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will review RCMP findings.

The name of the deceased has not been released.
