Environment Canada issued snowfall and winter storm warnings Thursday, covering the capital region, and parts of central and northern Alberta.
A winter storm warning was issued Thursday for Bonnyville-St. Paul-Cold Lake-Lac La Biche, and Fort McMurray-Fort McKay.
Officials said hazardous winter conditions are expected, as a major storm is in the forecast, with as much as 25 centimetres of snow falling in east-central Alberta on Friday. The snowfall is expected to end early Saturday morning.
Along with the snow, officials said strong northeasterly winds will contribute to reduced visibility in the area.
Plus, snowfall warnings were issued for areas as far west as Hinton-Grande Cache, as far north as Slave Lake, east to Lloydminster-Wainwright-Vermilion-Provost, and as far south as Drayton Valley-Devon-Rimbey-Pigeon Lake.
Under that warning, about 15 to 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall across central Alberta on Thursday night and into Friday – in the Hinton and Whitecourt regions, a total of 15 to 25 centimetres of snow is expected to fall before Friday night.
Officials also said travel conditions could quickly deteriorate.
