A 54-year-old man from Stony Plain, Alta. was killed in a head-on collision between an ambulance and a pickup Tuesday morning.
Brian Clark was the driver of the pickup and was pronounced dead on scene.
A female ambulance attendant, who was tending to a patient, was airlifted to Edmonton by STARS air ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened around 9:30 a.m., about 20 kilometres west of Smoky Lake on Highway 28. Police said the ambulance, which was westbound on a patient transfer collided with the pickup travelling eastbound.
"It appears that the ambulance went off the highway and came back and struck the vehicle, the pickup truck in the driving lane," said Keith Pettipas with the Smoky Lake Detachment.
A male passenger in the pickup and the female driver of the ambulance were treated for undetermined injuries.
The collision is still under investigation. Neither alcohol or weather appear to be factors in the collision.
