Edmonton police said Thursday that the man believed to have struck and killed a man in his 30s last week had been identified, but officers were still trying to find him.

Police said the Jonathan Jake Cardinal, 31, had been identified as the suspect in the June 13 hit and run crash that left Adam Groves, 33, dead.

Now, Cardinal is wanted on Canada-wide warrants for charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and theft over $5,000.

Cardinal is described as:

  • Aboriginal male
  • 177 cm (5’10”) tall
  • Weighing 81 kg (180 lbs)
  • Medium build
  • Medium length brown/black hair

It’s believed Cardinal is in Edmonton, although he has no fixed address – police warned he is not to be approached, as he’s considered a danger to the public and himself.

The charges against Cardinal stemmed from a hit and run, that left Groves dead – it’s believed Cardinal was attempting to flee from police who had been pursuing him that morning.

The suspect jumped into a pickup truck, that had been running, in a parking lot in the area of 29 Street and 116A Avenue – but the truck’s owner tried to stop him from driving away, he was hit and fatally injured as the suspect fled in the truck.

Anyone with information on Cardinal’s whereabouts is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone.
