Edmonton police are investigating after two people were shot in a brazen midday shooting outside a north-end restaurant Saturday.

Police spokesperson Clair Seyler says just before 3:30 p.m., two men were leaving the Earls at 50 St. and 133 Ave. when they were approached by a man who shot at them.

Both men were taken to hospital, with one requiring immediate surgery. Witnesses say both men were conscious when taken away by ambulance. One of the men is believed to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

One witness was sitting on the patio when he says five or six shots rang out.

"All of sudden I heard boom,boom,boom,boom...they were walking just outside the doors. I looked over and one guy was laying down in a booth -- took a shot in the left shoulder, saw him shot in the right abdomen as well," said witness Greg.

Police believe this was not a random attack.

The suspect is reported to have fled to a vehicle and drove off.

He is described as:

  • Caucasian
  • In his 20's
  • Wearing grey sweat pants, black gloves, a black hoodie and a red T-shirt.

The restaurant has now become a crime scene with police tape blocking off the entrance. Police are in the process of interviewing dozens of witnesses inside the restaurant.

A third male who was with the two victims at the time of the shooting was not injured.
