Edmonton Police said a woman in her 20s had been charged, after a laser was pointed at Air 1 crew members as they flew over southeast Edmonton early Tuesday morning.

Police said at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, members from the Edmonton Police Service Southeast Division and Air 1 was responding to an attempted break and enter in the Bonnie Doon area.

As the helicopter responded, crew members were repeatedly targeted by a laser that was being pointed at them from the ground.

Officers on the ground tracked the source of the laser to a home in the area of 88 Street and 84 Avenue, where a female suspect was arrested.

“The Edmonton Police Service has zero tolerance for irresponsible behaviour like this, that seriously compromises the safety of our air crew, not to mention our citizens,” Staff Sgt. Tom Bechthold said in a statement. “Air 1 officers play a vital role in assisting our members on the ground in their daily efforts to keep our city safe.”

Now, Sarah Schenker, 28, has been charged under the Federal Aeronautics Act with endangering the safety of an aircraft in flight.
