Edmonton police are investigating the scene in downtown Edmonton where a vehicle reportedly drove into a parking stall and struck a female. The woman was standing by the wall of a nearby building when the vehicle pinned her.

The incident happened just after noon Monday in the area of 105 Street south of Jasper Avenue.

One witness tells CTV News he was walking by when he noticed a man screaming by the vehicle.

"I came running up, there was a lady pinned under this black Sunfire," said Randy Kinash. "He's running around not knowing what to do, and I yelled, 'look buddy you got to help me'".

Randy says he and the driver then proceeded to help lift the car off of the victim's legs and waited until emergency crews arrived.

"She was conscious when we lifted the vehicle off, then she went into more of a shock and slowly nodded out and passed out."

The victim, an Atco employee who was in her early 40s, was taken to hospital where she died a short time later.

The majority of the victim's coworkers are a loss for words at this point.

"It's a terrible loss and I know that our people are deeply concerned and distressed to lose a colleague in this way," said Atco president Bobbi Lambright.

The adult male driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Police say charges are pending against the driver. Investigators do not believe alcohol or a medical condition played a factor in the incident.

Police have now seized the car for a mechanical inspection. Occupational Health and Safety is also involved in the investigation.

Atco officials say grief counsellors have been brought in for their staff.
