Officials with Edmonton’s two school divisions are taking action against a trend police said they have seen grow recently.

Police said School Resource Officers have reported an increase in the use of marijuana oil through e-cigarettes by some students – EPS said using marijuana oil in the e-cigarettes doesn’t produce an odour.

According to EPS, five incidents have been reported, or discovered, by School Resource Officers in the last two weeks, and there have been a number of other incidents where the electronic cigarettes were found on students.

Officials are concerned because by using marijuana oil into an e-cigarette cartridge, the user is exposed to higher levels of THC – contents in the oiler are higher than 90 percent, compared to a typical marijuana cigarette that contains about 10-20 percent THC.

As a result, officials with both Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools are banning the use of those devices on school district property.
