New legislation to address issues in Alberta’s 911 system is close to becoming law, as the province said it has passed third reading.
The Emergency 911 Act, or Bill 15, passed third reading in the legislature.
The Act includes an added 44 cent levy to cell phone customers, to go directly to 911 services, fines for those who deliberately call 911 without an emergency, and improve supports for dispatchers.
However, before that happens, the province said officials will finalize details of implementing the added charge for cell phone customers, work out how added funds will be distributed to call centres and start the process of developing standards, guidelines and policies for 911 service.
The Act will be proclaimed later this year.
