The teen that beat a sleeping father to death while a two-year-old was in the home has been handed an adult sentence.

The now 22-year-old’s name can be made public for the first time since he murdered John Kwiatkowski in 2011.

In April 2011, Chase Paul escaped from a youth detention centre near Regina before making his way to Edmonton.

Just two days shy of his 18th birthday, Paul was high on drugs and alcohol when randomly entered John Kwiatkowski’s Edmonton home and beat him to death.

Kwiatkowski’s body was found by his wife in the family’s home, when she returned from an overnight shift at work.

On Wednesday, Justice Sterling Sanderman handed down an adult sentence of second-degree murder and lifted the publication ban on Paul’s name.

Chase will serve a life sentence with no chance of parole for seven years.
