The world’s largest cannabis production facility is being built in Leduc County, and it is set to open in October 2017.
Aurora Cannabis is building an 800,000 square foot facility – larger than 16 football fields – at the Edmonton International Airport called “Aurora Sky.”
The hybrid greenhouse facility plans to produce more than 100,000 kilograms of cannabis per year to meet demand once the product becomes legal in Canada.
“Aurora’s been a really good company,” Ray English, an investor in cannabis companies, told CTV News. “They’ve followed all the regulations and done everything that the government has wanted them to.
“I think to have that at the airport, that’s phenomenal,” English said. “You talk about diversity in our economy – there you’ve got it,” English’s wife Michelle said.
City councillors will debate cannabis regulations on Tuesday, while they wait on concrete legalization plans from the federal government.
