Believe it or not, it has been 30 years since the first time the Edmonton Oilers brought the Stanley Cup back home – and the team is planning to pull out all the stops to mark the milestone anniversary.
Oilers Entertainment Group Vice-Chairman Kevin Lowe, and Wayne Gretzky (joining via live video conference) announced Tuesday that the entire roster of the 1984 Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers would reunite on October 10, to mark three decades since the team’s first win.
“Back to back 7 to 2 wins in games three and four against one of the greatest dynasties of all time, unfathomable,” Lowe said.
It’s an idea Gretzky himself came up with, and he talked about his excitement for the upcoming event.
“To reminisce and selfishly have some fun together,” Gretzky said. “A lot of players met a lot of great friends over the years and maybe haven’t seen people for a long time.”
The event will also be in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, fees generated from ticket sales will go to the charity. The charity said the money will go to create a new pediatric ambulatory clinic.
According to the team, the event will include a look back at the greatest moments of the 1983-1984 season, along with a number of musical acts to take fans back to the time.
“Maybe it’s a new generation of kids that can see us, and talk to us and get autographs and hear from players what it’s like to win a championship,” Gretzky said. “It’s really special.”
Tickets, priced at $99, will be available to the public starting Friday, August 22 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster and the Edmonton Oilers website.
