RCMP said Friday evening that officers arrested Travis Vader in connection to the slayings of Lyle and Marie McCann in 2010.
Police said Vader was arrested Friday, in relation to recommencement of proceedings by the Crown against him, in connection to the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann.
RCMP said its alleged Vader killed the couple on July 3, 2010.
At the time of their disappearance, the couple had been travelling from their home in St. Albert to visit family in B.C. when they went missing.
Afterwards, Vader was the only individual named in connection to the case, and the only person charged.
Vader was arrested without incident, and RCMP said he will be held until he speaks to bail.
The McCann family released the following statement after news of Vader’s arrest broke:
“Today's news means that we will now have the opportunity to learn more about the investigation into our [parents’] death when this case comes to trial. Our goal now is to ensure the accused receives a fair trial and to that end, we will not be speaking publicly at this time. We ask that you respect our privacy.”
Homicide proceedings against Vader were stayed by the Crown in March, giving the Crown one year to recommence proceedings.
Vader had been in custody, but was released in October after being held on unrelated matters.
