Alberta Health Services has confirmed another case of measles in the Edmonton Zone – and the patient is another infant, who is too young to receive the measles vaccine.

According to AHS, the latest confirmed case is connected to another case – that was announced on April 19.

Officials also advised of potential exposure locations linked to this case:

  • Zion Baptist Church (9802 76 Avenue in Edmonton) – April 18 and 19, between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both days, and April 20 between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Mac’s Store (8403 Ellerslie Road in Edmonton) – April 19 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Alice’s Produce Market (3232 82 Street in Edmonton – April 22 between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

AHS said anyone who was at those locations, on the dates and during the times listed, and has not been immunized, could be at risk for developing the illness and are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms.

Symptoms of the measles include: a fever of 38.3 degrees Celsius or higher, a cough, runny nose, and/or red eyes, and a red, blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face, before spreading down the body and then to the arms and legs.

AHS has said in the past that anyone who may have been exposed to the virus should monitor themselves, and if they develop symptoms, not go to a medical health centre, but should call Health Link Alberta at 1-800-408-5465 to determine their next steps.

News of this case came a day after AHS said another infant, who was also too young to be vaccinated, was the latest case of the measles confirmed in Edmonton.

The vaccine is available free of charge through the province’s immunization program – typically, AHS said children should receive their first dose of the measles vaccine at 12 months of age, with their second dose administered between the ages of four and six years.
