Parking enforcement officers are about to kick-off a three-week zero-tolerance parking enforcement campaign around city schools to get the attention of drivers who park illegally.

"Parking illegally around schools creates congestion and visual obstructions, so it's harder for drivers to see kids crossing the street," said parking enforcement coordinator with the City of Edmonton Joshua Puchailo.

The city advises parents who drop their children off for school should park legally down the street from the school and walk their children to the door.

The city says the campaign will also focus on the residential neighbourhoods, bus zones and emergency access routes around post-secondary institutions.

Vehicles found illegally parked will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense without warning.

Last September, officers handed out more than 1,000 tickets, and dozens of vehicles parked around schools and post-secondary institutions were towed.

A fine of up to $250 can be expected for drivers caught illegally parking in disabled zones or blocking emergency access routes.
