Officials in Strathcona County said Wednesday afternoon that crews were on the scene of two wildfires in the area.

On Wednesday afternoon, officials said police and emergency crews were on the scene of a large grass fire in the area of Range Road 213 and Township Road 531 near Ardrossan.

Smoke from that fire was affecting visibility in the area, and shut down Highway 16 in both directions between Range Road 213 and 214 – and drivers were being detoured around the scene.

Firefighters were working to get the blaze under control for some time, officials said it was under control, and RCMP reopened the highway just before 8 p.m.

Later Wednesday, officials said crews were at another fire in the area of Township Road 562, in the northern part of the county - in an area about 20 minutes northeast of Fort Saskatchewan.

Smoke from that fire was also reducing visibility, and officials had closed Township Road 562 between Range Roads 211 and 213 in both directions. The road was also reopened by later in the evening.

Later Wednesday evening, officials said that fire was ‘confined’ – one responder was reportedly injured.

Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Gale Katchur tweeted some photos showing the fire northeast of Fort Saskatchewan.
