The death of a man, who was found in the downtown area Sunday afternoon, is now being called Edmonton's most recent homicide, and a security guard is facing charges.

Police said officers were called to the area of 107A Avenue and 96 Street at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday, July 31 – an injured man was found in an alley near a strip mall.

Paramedics attended the scene, and the man was pronounced dead.

At the time, police said his death was not considered suspicious, but an autopsy conducted Wednesday revealed the man, identified as Donald Doucette, 51, died as a result of blunt abdominal trauma.

It’s believed the deceased was assaulted and robbed in the alley by a man who was working as a private security guard in the area on Sunday afternoon.

That security guard, identified by police as Sheldon Russell Bentley, 35, was arrested Thursday without incident. He is facing charges of manslaughter and robbery.

Doucette's death is Edmonton's 29th homicide of the year.
