Edmonton businesses step up to aid evacuees after Jasper fires
Businesses in Edmonton and across the province are making an effort to aid people affected by wildfires burning in Alberta, including the ones that devastated Jasper this week.
Earlier this week, Jasper was evacuated as two wildfires approached the town. On Wednesday evening, the fires reached the townsite.
As pictures and videos emerge, showing the destruction in one of Alberta's famous mountain tourist destinations, businesses across the province are offering their aid to refugees.
Here are some of the businesses offering aid to refugees:
- The Beauty Parlour - Complimentary washes and blow drys
- Campio Brewing Co. - 50 per cent off regular-priced food items
- Chianti Italian Restaurant - One free meal per person
- Greta - Free meal up to $25 per person and a three hour time play game card
- Hide N' Seek - Free admission for evacuees
- The Starlite Room - Free entry to shows this weekend
- Track 'N Trail - A free pair of $99 sale shoes or clothing off the sale rack of up to $200 original value
- Bridgeviews (Drumheller) - Free camping, tenting or RV sites
- The Military Museums (Calgary) - Free admission for evacuees
- Risewell Psychology (Calgary) - Free short-term crisis counseling
- Smitty's (Hinton) - Free meal for evacuees
Other businesses are donating profits from certain days or items to fire relief efforts, including:
- Alberta’s Own Market (Canmore) - July 25 and 26
- Amy Dixon Art - Pyramid Mountain print until July 31
- Be the Change Boutique - profits from specified items donated to aid efforts
- 2Crit2Quit - Jasper aid products
- Cochrane Vintage - All profits from sales until Aug. 1 donated to aid efforts
- Fahrenheit Delight (Calgary) - Portion of sales in August will be donated to evacuees
The City of Edmonton is also working with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency to support evacuees. More information on services available is on the city's website.
Local entrepreneur Peter Keith, co-founder of Meuwly's artisan food market, is also working to gather businesses for a relief initiative.
Planet Fitness is also allowing people affected by recent wildfires to access "shower facilities, electrical outlets and more" free of charge at the following locations in Alberta and B.C.:
