RED DEER, Alta. - The mother of a Mountie gunned down three years ago near Mayerthorpe says she will go to his grave every day at dusk to try to stop vandals from defacing it again.

Doreen Jewell-Duffy says she found the grave of her son, Const. Anthony Gordon, a total mess when she went to visit last weekend.

"I wwas devastated and said there are a lot of sick people out there," she said. "Why would anybody go to that length to do this destruction?"

Vandals had broken angels, chipped his headstone, stolen mementoes and pitched others aside.

Jewell-Duffy says his grave was the only one targeted in the whole cemetery in Red Deer, Alta.

"This was targeted," she said. "It had to be targeted because everybody else's grave was in tact."

She says RCMP are investigating, but she'll do her best to be at the grave often enough to keep watch herself.

Gordon was one of four young officers shot dead in March 2005 by James Roszko during a police investigation on his property - the greatest one-day loss of life for the RCMP in 100 years.
