Dozens of concerned Greenfield residents attended an open house Wednesday, to discuss a proposed cell phone tower planned for the area.

Telus has already signed a contract with the Greenfield Baptist Church, which would allow the 25 metre tower to be installed.

A Telus representative said the open house was planned to show residents what the cell tower would look like, and to answer questions.

Many of the residents in attendance at the standing-room-only meeting were there to express their concerns for the health of their families should the tower go up.

"They ride their bikes over there, we walk past that area to get to the park," Darci Macht, a Greenfield resident who lives next to the church where the cell tower would be built said. "I just want to know how safe is it to be around that tower?"

A representative of Telus came prepared with insight into the radio frequencies emitted from a cell phone tower.

"Our calculations show that the signal strength at the school is going to be about 10,000 times lower than the safe limits that Health Canada Requires," Jim Johansson, with Telus media relations said at the meeting.

According to Health Canada, a person is exposed to more radio frequencies when they have a cellular phone next to their ear, than when they are near a cell phone tower.

The meeting wasn't the only chance for residents to voice their opinion, Telus has set an October 12th deadline for public feedback.

After that deadline, the proposal will go to the city for review, but the final decision will be made by Industry Canada – which could take several months.
