Consider it a two-pronged attempt on how to beat the heat in Edmonton this weekend.
On one end, music enthusiasts will be slathering on the sunscreen, grabbing a cool beverage and seeking shade when the Folk Festival gets underway Thursday at Gallagher Park.
On the other end, 700 gamers will be packing the Sportex for Fragapalooza for a weekend-long video game marathon. The sun will be no more than a distant thought in this shadowy world.
Organizers for the Folk Festival say medical teams will be on the lookout for heat exhaustion, sun burns and heat stroke.
Temperatures are expected to top 30 degrees for the next three days in Edmonton.
Site manager Don Snider is encouraging everyone who comes out to the outdoor music fest to be sun smart.
"Hydration is key, sunscreen and a floppy hat is great," he said.
Meanwhile, the gamers are only concerned with staying hydrated during the marathon tournament.
Some players said they won't even miss the sun during the weekend.
"We're gamers, we don't like the heat," Josh Folland said.
At Gallagher Park, organizers are offering important tips for staying cool:
- Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
- Re-apply sunscreen every few hours
- Bring a lot of water and constantly hydrate
- Wear a hat
- Seek the shade
