Days after shots rang out in St. Paul, Alberta, leaving three RCMP officers injured, and one dead – and another man was shot and killed, RCMP are still gathering evidence and seeking possible witnesses.

On Monday, Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan addressed the media about the incidents that had unfolded in St. Paul on Friday, May 9.

That evening, at about 6 p.m., police said shots were heard outside the RCMP detachment, and a black truck was seen fleeing the parking lot moments later.

At about the same time, RCMP received an emergency call regarding a man in medical distress at a home near the detachment – the man was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead.

RCMP have not confirmed the identity of the deceased, but the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton confirmed a priest in that community, Father Gilbert Dasna, had died.

As for the truck, officers quickly tracked down the truck, and it was seen speeding in the downtown area of the community – but when RCMP arrived the suspect fired at a police car, striking one of the officers, then police said the suspect rammed his vehicle into another police vehicle, trapping a female officer inside.

Then, police said he opened fire on the officers – and RCMP said the officers on the scene returned fire, killing the suspect.

Three RCMP officers were injured in the exchange, by Monday, two of them had been released from hospital, but a female officer – who had been trapped in her vehicle, remained in hospital with serious injuries to her feet.

“Her feet were compacted by the crush of the vehicle,” Ryan said. “She actually told me that when she was extricated from the vehicle she felt like her toes were touching her shins.”

Ryan said as of Monday, investigators were not drawing a connection between Dasna’s death, and the death of the suspect, identified as John Quadros, 55, she said investigators are waiting for results of autopsies, set for Tuesday.

However, Ryan said no one else is believed to have been involved in Dasna’s death.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the series of events that lead to Quadros’ death, and RCMP are treating Dasna’s death as a homicide.

Police are seeking suspects in the RCMP-involved shooting, releasing photos of a red Chevrolet Cavalier that was seen parked near the incident.

The occupants of the vehicle are believed to have information that may help investigators, and RCMP are asking anyone who was in that vehicle, or knows who was, to call St. Paul RCMP at 780-645-8858.
