Wood Buffalo RCMP announced Tuesday that a new vehicle had been added to their fleet, and it’s already been out on patrol.

Police said a new jet boat is now part of the RCMP fleet – and it will be used to patrol, and for calls on the several waterways throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, including the Athabasca River, Clearwater River and Gregoire Lake.

It’s hoped the boat will help RCMP enforce a number of offences including impaired operation of a vessel, illegal possession and consumption of alcohol in a vessel, wildlife and fisheries offences and shipping, small vessel infractions.

RCMP said officers patrolled using the boat Sunday, May 18. Covering about 70 kilometres of waterways, they found no infractions, but helped a boat and its occupants that had run out of fuel – towing the boat to safety.
