Man found dead after fire at Edson, Alta., seniors' building
A fire at a seniors' apartment complex in Edson, Alta., left one man dead and prompted an evacuation just after midnight Tuesday.
At 12:16 a.m., RCMP and the Edson Fire Department responded to calls about a structure fire at the Heritage Court seniors' apartment building.
The fire was contained to the one unit on the third floor. RCMP said an elderly man was found dead inside the unit the fire originated in.
All other residents were accounted for and no one else was injured as a result of the fire, said RCMP.
"Amazing job by the Edson fire department, it was incredible," Kristen Chambers, CAO of Evergreens Foundation, told CTV News Edmonton.
All 30 residents were displaced and are currently staying with family or at other Evergreens Foundation homes in Edson.
It is still not known when residents will be allowed back into Heritage Court.
An autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the man's identity.
Mounties said the cause of the fire is still unknown but fire investigators are not considering it to be suspicious.
